Song Review | "Frei" - Raunen
German metal act, Raunen released their debut 5-track EP "Immerfort" in May. The final track of the EP, "Frei" which translates to "Free" is a powerful end to the 5 track release. The band's lyrics are all in German but the emotion of "Frei" carries through whether you speak the language or not.
"Frei" launches into action with no hesitation, introducing itself with explosive guitar chugs, fuzzy lead guitar melodies, and booming screamed vocals. Raunen quickly establishes an intensely heavy atmosphere within their music while prominent lead guitar riffage mixes melody and dissonance. Clocking in at 8 and a half minutes, "Frei" displays a versatile range of sound for the band. After a sludgy, classic metal sound, Raunen picks up the pace and speeds into groovy thrash metal.
With "Frei", Raunen shows a deeply experimental and exciting sound, crossing genres and keeping a varied and interesting sound throughout the track. Raunen switches between singing and screamed vocals, clean and distorted instrumentals, and tempo changes that show impressive musicianship. "Frei" truly takes the listener on a journey that fans of all metal genres will certainly enjoy. "Frei" is an excellent showcase of progressive metal blended with a classic and unforgivingly heavy metal sound that we all love.
