Song Review: Scott Middlin "D3SATUR8"

Australia-born artist Scott Middlin released his latest EP, "A Taste Of Chaos," on February 20th, 2026. In addition to his solo work, Scott has earned recognition for his work as the vocalist of post-hardcore act Emecia and is also a published author of his book "Dyslexic Kid," which recounts his fight with cancer and his journey as a musician. Middlin is also a tattoo artist in addition to his music and writing.

"D3SATUR8" begins with explosively heavy drop-tuned guitar chugging and ferocious low growls, instantly building a crushing deathcore sound. A choppy high synth adds a sense of melody before the song suddenly pulls back as lofi beats, clean vocals, and atmospheric pads build a softer sound. Suddenly, the track slams back into full intensity heaviness before introducing the song's singing chorus. Scott Middlin, within the first minute, shows a fearless ability to switch between ambient indie-pop-esque melodies and extreme metal within a moment. The juxtaposition between heavy and soft elements reminds me a little bit of modern metalcore, but Middlin's track doesn't follow the "formulaic" style of most metalcore bands.

At just over 4 minutes, Scott manages to fit in a satisfying contrast between dynamics as alternating singing and screaming lead into a brutal breakdown as distant singing adds melody behind visceral instrumentals. The song fades out with a final lofi reminiscent section that finalizes the track with a gentle note.

Overall, "D3SATUR8" is an impressive release that fans of extreme metal, metalcore, and hard rock will enjoy. You can stream Scott Middlin's new EP, available on all streaming platforms now!
