311 at Ventura Majestic Theater: Concert Review and Photos

What could be better than seeing your favorite band perform in a huge arena…seeing them perform in a small theater in a sleepy ocean-side town. 311 performed a completely sold-out show at The Majestic Ventura Theater, as part of their “Road to 311 Day” – a tour of small theaters and clubs on their way to two back-to-back no-repeat shows in Las Vegas at the MGM Park on 311 (March 11th).
The Majestic Ventura Theater is a small 1200 capacity theater located in Ventura, a coastal town 70 miles north of Los Angeles. It was built in the 1920’s during the oil boom, and originally designed to be a movie theater, but there were no films playing on Wednesday night. Instead, anxious fans circled the block waiting for the doors to open at 7:00pm, mostly hidden from passing traffic by the fleet of semi-trucks and production vehicles needed to haul the equipment and band – definitely an out-of-place visual oddity in such a quaint town.
311 first came on most people’s radar with their 1995 triple-platinum-selling self-titled album, featuring “Down” and “All Mixed Up”. Their popularity only grew with subsequent albums, and their unique mix of rock, reggae, hip-hop, and funk made for feel-good music that was impossible not to move or dance to when it came blasting out of the speakers.

When 311 hit the stage at 9:15pm, and the first notes of “Beautiful Disaster” hit the theater, the audience exploded with a wall of sound that rivaled what was coming from the PA system. To say that they were excited is a gross understatement – everyone had their hands up, and the crowd surged forward to be closer to the performers on stage.
The setlist was a good representation of their career, with songs from eight of their fourteen studio albums, and not just the obvious hits. While they played “Come Original”, “Amber”, “All Mixed Up”, and a cover of The Cure’s “Lovesong”, there were plenty of deeper cuts sprinkled in for hard-core fans. People in the audience were dancing and grooving – it was one of the happiest crowds I’ve ever been in, and the music blasting from the stage was hypnotizing. By the time the last notes of “Down” started to fade, and sweaty and exhausted people slowly made their way to the exit, it was clear that those lucky enough to have been part of the night’s events would have a memory that lasted a lifetime.
