Song Review: AEGROR - “Reign of Disease

Hailing from Kerken, Germany, AEGROR is a black metal act who recently released their album Reign of Disease on May 16th after an 8 year hiatus. The band is back, and with a renewed passion, AEGROR (which translates from Latin meaning ”disease”) covers themes of illness and psychological phenomena, building tales of horror and madness based around the fictional character “Plaguebreeder”. Their music also often metaphorically reflects upon crises, pandemics, and real-world events.
The title track Reign of Disease starts with building drums and screeching guitar chords before introducing raw screams into the mix. Labeling themselves as ”post-black metal” or “progressive black metal”, AEGROR showcases production quality that is higher than black metal and progressive elements that set them apart from traditional black metal bands.
Rapid tremolo guitar leads, slamming drums, and harsh screams, all work together to deliver an intensely brutal sound that brings a hard-hitting yet grooving sound to your ears. AEGROR utilizes contrast between tempos to create vast differences in Reign of Disease as galloping drum beats lead into slowed, sludgy riffs.
Overall, AEGROR returns with an impressive album, particularly for fans of black metal, thrash, and extreme metal genres. You can stream Reign of Darkness out on all platforms now!
