EP Review: Buzzard - "Everything Is Not Going To Be Alright"
Christopher Thomas Elliott is the man behind folk doom metal act, Buzzard, who have just released the 7-track EP Everything Is Not Going To Be Alright. Hailing from Massachusetts, Christopher handles all vocals, instruments, songwriting, and production on his own.
The EP starts with This Land Is Your Land (Until It's Not) which starts with a twangy country acoustic guitar before launching into thick, sludgy guitar that showcases an intense contrast between the two sounds. Buzzard delivers a brutally heavy sound with distorted guitar chugging and drawn-out dark chords as layered vocals cut through the mix with a haunting presence. In a bridge clean reverbed guitar backs up gentle singing as drums build into full doom intensity once again, fading out the song.
Doom Folk Fury starts with a melancholy folk guitar melody as politically charged lyrics reveal thoughts on the state of society, the government, and more. Fuzzy doom metal guitar creates a palpable atmosphere as soaring vocals add a backbone of melody to the track. Soon, bright guitar leads take the forefront as they add energy and dynamics behind the heavier rhythm guitar. Buzzard does an excellent job of using two vastly different genres–doom metal and folk music–to create a sense of contrast and intrigue.
Screaming into the Void introduces itself with chunky guitar chugging, darker singing vocals, and grooving drums. Buzzard uses a spoken-singing style that reminds a little of nu-metal or rap style vocals while lyrics talk of frustrations with modern life. With a slower chorus featuring lengthy chords and bright organs, Screaming Into The Void keeps the doom metal vibe going while adding moments of slowed atmospheres that add a sense of versatility to the track.
Next is Terms and Conditions Apply, which starts with an acoustic guitar intro that is soon layered behind full-octane electric guitar as singing is introduced. Fuzzy guitar and slamming drums create hard-hitting atmospheres before sections fade into prominent acoustic guitar, creating a change in dynamics. Lyrics provide a commentary on the conditionality of life, religion, and authority.
Fever Breaks starts with a groovy guitar riff that stays consistent throughout most of the song as lyrics are emphasised, focusing on politics. After about 3 minutes, the song takes a heavier turn as intensity increases with brutal, distorted chugging creating a memorable and explosive sound.
Take The Tyrant Down starts with folk acoustic guitar and distant air before soft singing is brought into the fray. As the name suggests, the song tells the story of overthrowing tyranny. Take The Tyrant Down features a more relaxed sound than much of the songs before it, as groovy drums, bright, clean guitar, and vocals create a ballad-like sound that adds an interesting change of pace to the EP. Still though, Buzzard makes things heavy in a final burst of energy before piano and orchestral strings fade out the song.
The final song, Lunatic Lighthouse Keeper, starts with strings, distorted guitar, and singing, creating an instantly dark and thick atmosphere that is recognizable as doom metal. Instrumental runs alternate with singing as organs create a sound that actually reminded me a little of Ghost's gothic, anti-religious sound. Things take a break as textured bass, acoustic guitar, and haunting vocals create an ominous sound that builds into the last burst of energy that ends the EP.
Overall, Everything Is Not Going To Be Alright is a great showcase of Buzzard's folk doom sound that is filled with thought-provoking political and societal commentary. Fans of metal, extreme metal, and folk music will enjoy the distinctness that Buzzard offers with their music. You can stream Everything Is Not Going To Be Alright available now.
