EP Review: Mirror Mirage - "Missing Pieces"

After taking a hiatus from the progressive rock scene, guitarist/songwriter Wouter van der Veen (known for his work in Armed Cloud and Steelyard) is making a defiant return with Mirror Mirage.

Mirror Mirage just released their debut 3-track EP, Missing Pieces on June 30th, which is available on all streaming platforms now. You can watch the video for Too Close To The Sun on YouTube below.

The EP starts off with Too Close To The Sun which quickly showcases progressive acoustic guitar as powerful distorted guitar fills in the atmosphere alongside grooving drum beats. Soon soaring clean vocals join the fray, building upon the song's growing melodies. In a burst of energy, Mirror Mirage jumps into a dynamic chorus with infectious vocal hooks and a mix of upbeat energy and melancholy lyrics. After a technical guitar solo and final addictive chorus, Too Close To The Sun slowly fades out.

Next up is For All The Missing Pieces which wastes no time–bursting into action with hard-hitting progressive guitar riffs. Mirror Mirage understand changes in dynamics very well, changing between aggressive riffs and ambient atmospheres with clean singing, creating distinct differences in sound that keep things fresh. Intricate soundscapes are complemented by mystical harps, deep pads, and melodic synths, creating a powerful and wildly catchy sound. At just under 7 minutes, For All The Missing Pieces takes the listener on a sonic journey through progressive instrumentation, storytelling, and drastic changes in energy.

The final track of the EP, Law Of The Jungle starts with a more old-school metal sound with dark, sludgy riffs that remind of a mix of doom metal and acts like Tool. Taking a distinctly different sound from the first 2 tracks, Mirror Mirage shows that they can cover a vast amount of sounds with their music, keeping the EP interesting throughout its runtime. In a rapid change of tempo, Law Of The Jungle bursts into thrashing drum beats and a speeding guitar solo before transitioning back into the track's slow, chugging sound.

Overall Missing Pieces is a very impressive debut that mixes progressive rock with metal elements, in a sound that is new while still paying homage to the genre's greats. With excellent production quality and an interesting sound, Mirror Mirage leaves us excited to see what comes from the band next.

You can stream Missing Pieces out on all platforms now.
