Review
Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, melodic death metal duo Praise My Pain released their debut EP, To Die Today, on April 28th, 2025. Made up of vocalist Topi Seppälä and guitarist Taneli Puotiniemi, the metal act dives into themes of self-inflicted harm, pain, and damage that we wish upon others.
The EP starts with the title track, to die today which acts as an instrumental intro that starts with Nine Inch Nails-esque industrial electronic beats before introducing bright guitar melodies and down-tuned death metal chugs. Suddenly, the track bursts into galloping tempos, speeding riffs, and grooving blast beats in traditional death metal fashion before fading out with the returning industrial beat. Praise My Pain quickly shows they are not your average death metal act–they aren't afraid of experimentation.
Poison Me picks up where its predecessor left off, lightning-fast pacing, intense growls, and crushing riffs create a brutally exciting musical style. Praise My Pain's raw aggression and destructive sound are matched by progressive instrumentation, seeming to blend elements from melodic death metal, deathcore, metalcore, and black metal into a distinct and unique package.
Stains starts off with screeching guitar pinch harmonics, soaring instrumental scales, and an overall bright sound before switching things up into a dark, atmospheric sound as extreme vocals are introduced. Praise My Pain expertly uses elements of contrast in their music, keeping the balance of melody and brutality strikingly interesting throughout their tracks. After an impressively technical solo, the song slowly fades out with whispered vocals.
The final track, Cut Your Wings begins with ambient clean guitar before unexpectedly bursting into rapidly-paced full band destruction, taking a more traditional death metal sound. While Praise My Pain keeps a dark and emotion-filled sound, their use of bright lead guitar and piano melodies adds powerful, catchy elements over the dark and intricate heavy soundscapes.
Overall, To Die Today is a wildly impressive debut release, taking a traditional extreme metal sound and changing it to fit the modern music industry with dynamic production and exceptional audio quality. Praise My Pain leaves listeners excited to see what comes from the band next, particularly following such a strong debut release.
