Reptilian EP Review: "Cold Blooded" | The Metalverse.net

Tracklist

  1. Non-human
  2. Paycheck
  3. Lawman Homicide
  4. Murder Sickness

Nashville metal act, Reptilian, recently released their newest EP, Cold Blooded, on April 11th, 2025.

"These songs will put hair on your chest and horns in your hands" - Reptilian

The band launches into action with screeching guitar leads and impactful drum fills before jumping right into hard-hitting riffage and ferocious screams. Non-Human quickly shows its thrash and death metal influences on its sleeve as rapid-paced drum beats and guitar riffs make way for heavy grooves that stand out. After a technical guitar solo, the Nashville act throws the listener back into the bands distinct old-school meets new age extreme metal sound.

Paycheck quickly sets itself apart from the last track, introducing a new level of brutality as down-tuned chunky guitar chugs make way for fiercely low growls, leaning more towards the death metal influences than the previous track's thrash posturing. In a sudden change, Reptilian brings clean singing to the forefront for the first time of the EP so far. Bright vocal hooks are contrasted by deep and dark instrumentals, creating a powerful contrast in musical styles. After a dissonant breakdown and some epic guitar shreddage, Paycheck fades out.

Next up is Lawman Homicide, which brings back speed metal influences initially with dramatic silences and galloping tempos. Don't count out the band's extreme influences though, the brutal growls and crushing riffs are still ever-present. Reptilian does an excellent job of balancing elements from multiple genres–Thrash, Death Metal, Metalcore, Hardcore, and more–into one distinct and cohesive sound. After an ambient guitar interlude, Reptilian suddenly bursts back into lightning-fast pacing to end the track with high intensity.

The final track of the EP, Murder Sickness starts with hard-hitting distorted guitar and alternating extreme vocals before building into racing blast beats and black metal tremolo picking. With an overall ominous sound, Murder Sickness is like the evil twin of the rest of the EP, with a more eerie sound that features only heavy vocal techniques. Murder Sickness, ends with a progressively slowing series of breakdowns that ends things in a finale of grandiose proportions.

Fans of thrash, death metal, and extreme metal genres are certain to enjoy Cold Blooded. Overall, Reptilian showcases an impressive sound that conveys a powerful concoction of multiple extreme metal genres into a clear sound that blends old-school influences with modern metal.
