Westone Audio
Westone's legacy reads like a masterclass in professional audio innovation. Founded in 1959 by Dr. John B. West, an audiologist who revolutionized hearing aid design, the company's DNA has always centered on one principle: create devices that perfectly match individual needs through meticulous engineering.
This philosophy proved transformative when Westone pivoted toward musicians and engineers in 1989, becoming instrumental in developing balanced armature drivers for custom in-ear monitors. By 1990, they were working with legendary acts like Rush and Def Leppard to create the first custom in-ear monitoring systems for stage use. That professional heritage carries forward today—Westone remains one of the most trusted names among mixing engineers, mastering professionals, and touring musicians who demand uncompromising sound accuracy.
In 2020, Lucid Audio acquired Westone, merging it with Etymotic Research and other respected audio brands. Rather than diluting the company's focus, this partnership strengthened their commitment to reference-grade sound reproduction. The Mach series, launched in 2022, represents the culmination of over 60 years of expertise, specifically engineered for discerning audiophiles who value sonic truthfulness above all else.
The Westone Mach 80
The Westone Mach 80 is the company's newest flagship IEM, following their previous top-of-the-line, the W80.
The Mach 80 has 8 balanced armature drivers featuring 2 low, dual mids, and quad highs, under a 3-way passive crossover. Westone's philosophy is to create a flat, genuine, and well-balanced sound that is completely accurate, revealing each song exactly how it was engineered to be heard.
The Mach 80 is created to be the ideal in-ear monitor for performing musicians, professional sound engineers, and audiophiles who want the most revealing, accurate sound presentation to give a completely honest music listening experience.
Priced at $1,407 USD, the Mach 80 is in the high-end IEM territory reserved for serious audio enthusiasts and professionals.
Packaging

In the $1,000+ flagship IEM range, some exciting packaging and accessories are pretty much expected, and Westone definitely delivers. You are greeted by a standard box-within-a-box setup, revealing an outer sleeve that contains some branding with a black box that you can slide out from the sleeve with a simple Westone logo.
Inside the box is a soft and hard case, a bunch of ear tips, and of course, the Mach 80s.
What's in the box:
- 1 x Mach 80 IEM
- 1 x 50-inch Linum Estron Ultra BaX cable
- 5 x pairs of silicone tips
- 5 x pairs of foam tips
- 1 x cleaning tool
- 1 x soft case
- 1 x hard Pelican carry case

Ear Tips
The included ear tips should fit any ear, with 5 different size and length options for both the silicone flanges and foam tips. The silicone tips offer a more balanced flat sound, while the foam tips will add a slight increase in bass response. One thing to note is that the Mach 80 does have a thinner nozzle (3mm), so if you run out of ear tips, you will need to purchase directly from Westone or an ear tip with an included 3mm to 2mm nozzle adapter.
Cases

The included soft carrying case is perfect to toss in a pocket and add some protection while taking up very little space, while the larger Pelican case is perfect for when you need more protection. The Pelican case feels bullet-proof, leaving absolute certainty that your Mach 80 will be protected. With a hard outer shell and condensed padding on the interior, this is one of the nicest stock cases we've seen included with an IEM.
The Cable
The included Linum Estron Ultra BaX cable matches the aesthetic of the Mach 80, adding a tan contrast to the black and gray of the shells. The Ultra Bax cable has 224 cores, an impedance of just 0.6Ω, and has a quad twisted cable thread. The cable is light and slimmer than many bulkier cables, but it still feels very durable while adding almost no pull on your ears while in use.
Build Quality and Design

The Mach 80 shells have a lightweight but sturdy build with a black and gray finish. Unlike the transparent shells that show off internal components, the Mach 80 uses matte-black hard plastic shells that feel premium despite their non-metallic construction. The material selection combined with a light design (roughly 5 grams per ear) means these IEMs virtually disappear during wear.
The nozzle design is approximately 2mm in diameter—thinner than standard IEMs—the nozzle optimizes acoustic tube efficiency while enabling a deeper, more secure fit. This thin profile requires Westone's proprietary ear tips, limiting third-party flexibility, but ensuring an optimized acoustic interface purpose-built for the Mach 80's sound signature.
The T2 connectors are smaller and more durable than traditional MMCX connectors.
Sound Quality

Bass
The Mach 80 has 2 balanced armatures dedicated to bass presentation. The bass comes across as punchy with incredible accuracy.
Mid-bass frequencies demonstrate remarkable neutrality. The Mach 80 maintains linearity throughout the lower register. This means kick drums punch with precision rather than boom, bass guitars sit clearly in the mix rather than drowning other instruments, and percussion instruments retain their natural transient character. Bass can be clearly heard alongside other instruments, creating great separation.
Using two dedicated drivers allows for tight control even during fast-paced electronic music or complex jazz arrangements where bass lines dart quickly across registers. The decays feel natural rather than artificially shortened, capturing the organic way bass instruments actually behave in real performances.
Mids
The midrange is one of the Mach 80's strong suits. Here, Westone demonstrates why professional mixing engineers trust their gear: the presentation is simultaneously smooth and revealing, coming across transparent but not overly harsh.
Lower midrange frequencies receive a subtle boost that provides body and warmth without coloration.
Vocals sound natural and present while acoustic instruments like guitars and pianos emerge with remarkable clarity. The Mach 80 has an overall very clean and detailed tuning that will help you catch details typically hidden on lesser quality IEMs. Yet somehow, this level of detail extraction never sounds too clinical or unpleasant. It simply sounds true.
Treble Response
Four balanced armature drivers dedicated exclusively to treble might suggest ear-slashing brightness. The Mach 80 proves that assumption wrong through meticulous crossover design and acoustic filtering.
The treble extends impressively far, maintaining energy well beyond 15kHz where many IEMs roll off. Yet despite this extension, the presentation remains smooth and controlled. The treble is clear without being too bright, preventing fatigue or painful sharpness.
High-frequency detail retrieval borders on remarkable. Cymbals exhibit realistic decay and shimmer rather than artificial sizzle. Sibilants ("S" sounds in vocals) resolve with precision rather than harshness. String instruments demonstrate their natural brightness and, even on aggressive rock/metal tracks or densely layered orchestral recordings, the treble remains composed and detailed rather than overwhelming.
With a sound representation that is smooth and clean, the Mach 80 might not have the most colorful tuning that immediately wows you–but as you listen to a few songs with them, their detailed accuracy becomes truly apparent and impressive.
Comfort and Isolation

One of the most impressive things about the Mach 80, besides their incredible detail, is how small and comfortable they are to wear. These are just as low profile as a single-driver IEM while having all the benefits of a well-executed 8-driver design.
With their ultra-compact housing and lightweight construction, the shells sit naturally in your ears, providing excellent isolation and unbelievable comfort. The included Estron cable is similarly light, adding barely any weight to the Mach 80. Combined with the company's True-fit foam ear tips and high-quality flanges, the result is an IEM that disappears during wear rather than that fatiguing “pulling sensation” that heavier in-ears have.
Westone creates a zero-gravity-like fit with the Mach 80, with these IEMs seriously feeling like you aren't even wearing a set of in-ears.
Westone Mach 80 Comparisons
Mach 80 vs. HiFiMan Svanar ($1,999)
The Mach 80 delivers noticeably superior stereo separation, creating an expansive soundstage that rivals small open-back headphones. The Svanar, while capable, sounds more intimate and forward-facing by comparison.
The Mach 80 edges ahead for versatile music listening, particularly for extended sessions. The Svanar remains more immediately exciting but less refined for critical listening.
Mach 80 vs. HiBy ZETA ($1,399)
The ZETA brings fun-focused tuning and excellent build quality at a very similar price. The ZETA's V-shaped tuning emphasizes bass noticeably—some describe it as boomy. The Mach 80's linear bass proves more universally appropriate, particularly for reference and accuracy. The ZETA impresses immediately, but can feel fatiguing after extended listening. The Mach 80 requires acclimation but deeply rewards patient listening.
Mach 80 vs. Sennheiser IE900 ($1,299)
The main comparisons between the IE900 and Mach 80 center on tuning differences rather than performance. The IE900 presents a more treble-forward "Sennheiser house sound" while the Mach 80 provides a more neutral sense of accuracy.
Our Verdict

This isn't an IEM designed to impress through a new “hype” tuning target. Instead, Westone engineered a tool that respects the listener's intelligence and the music's integrity.
Over extended listening sessions, the Mach 80's reference tuning becomes genuinely addictive. That initial perception of neutrality blossoms into appreciation for music exactly as artists intended it.
Comfort reaches levels unexpected from flagships sporting this many drivers. The featherweight design, expertly engineered housing, and professional cable assembly mean these IEMs become an afterthought when actively listening—precisely what reference monitors should do.
Is the $1,400 price justified? For mixing engineers, mastering professionals, and serious audiophiles who view their audio gear as tools for extended professional or personal use, absolutely. For casual listeners seeking a colored tuning that sounds immediately marginally different from what they are used to, perhaps not. But within the context of flagship universal IEM pricing, the Mach 80 delivers great value.
The Mach 80 is an incredibly appealing option for those looking for high-end audio that provides unrivaled comfort and a tuning that reveals detailed, reference-level sound. In a market flooded with flashy marketing and hyped-up new tunings, Westone quietly delivers something very valuable: genuine sonic truth.
