TURNSTILE “Seein’ Stars” and “Birds” Review: Part Hardcore, Part Disco, & Part Existential Crisis
Turnstile releases double singles and official music video leading up to new upcoming album.
Turnstile’s new tracks are like getting punched in the face and then kissed on the mouth—confusing, but kinda hot.
They’ve dropped a double-decker music video for Seein’ Stars and Birds, and it’s like someone spiked your protein shake with LSD. Seein’ Stars sounds like The Police, if Sting had a synth addiction and was trying to impress a Tinder date at a warehouse rave. It’s got Dev Hynes and Hayley Bloody Williams crooning in the background like it’s some horny indie prom. Hardcore fans will either love it or cry into their Doc Martens while tweeting angrily from a toilet cubicle.
Then Birds kicks in and suddenly you’re in the middle of a punch-on behind the pub. It starts slow and brooding, then slaps you with classic Turnstile chaos—fast, loud, and dirtier than a Portaloos at Splendour. It’s got that proper sweaty mosh pit energy. You can practically smell the armpits and bad decisions.
The video’s split too, first bit is slow-mo dancers in the dark looking like interpretive theatre students trying to summon a demon. Then it cuts to the band shredding on a grassy hill like it’s the hardcore version of The Sound of Music. There are kids legging it around like someone spiked the cordial, and Brendan Yates is screaming like his Uber just cancelled.
In short. Turnstile’s off the leash, making music that’s part hardcore, part disco, part existential crisis - and it absolutely rips. If this is what Never Enough is serving, I’m ready to ruin my spine in the pit and call it self-care.
