DepriVation “Mistakes Were Made” - Review

DepriVation“Mistakes Were Made”

Canberra groove metal veterans DepriVation have returned with a blistering new single, “Mistakes Were Made” - a punishing and unapologetic slab of riff driven catharsis that reminds us why this band have long been one of the most ferocious forces in Australian heavy music.

Clocking in at just over three and a half minutes, the track wastes no time getting to the point. Massive, chug laden riffs hit like a sledgehammer to the skull, with drums delivering pummelling grooves and surgical fills that push the track forward like a charging bull. Guitarist Lachlan Harrison doesn’t hold back - delivering crushing rhythms and a face melting solo that splits the difference between chaos and control. It’s groove metal with an old school spirit and a modern punch, produced and mixed with razor sharp clarity by Matt Clarke Audio.

Frontman Ben Weber is on top vocal form here, spitting venom with an intensity that feels both cathartic and genuinely unhinged. His delivery veers between raw throated rage and bitter reflection, perfectly capturing the emotional core of the song - a brutal, honest take on personal failure and self destruction. “Mistakes Were Made” isn’t just a title, it’s a confession wrapped in barbed wire. There’s a refreshing lack of pretence in Weber’s performance. It’s just pure, throat-shredding truth.

DepriVation aren’t new to this game - representing Australia at Wacken Open Air 2023 and with over a decade of relentless touring under their belt, they know exactly what they’re doing. This isn’t the sound of a band coasting, it’s the sound of a band doubling down on everything that makes them dangerous.

“Mistakes Were Made” is groove heavy, pissed off, and unapologetically Australian. It’s the kind of metal that doesn’t ask for your attention, but demands it. Turn it up loud, scream it in traffic, and remember why heavy music still matters.

FFO: Lamb of God, Pantera, Parkway Drive, and that one time you almost got in a fight at the pub but made a lifelong mate instead.
